Is South Africa Safe

Is South Africa safe?

Is South Africa Safe? How is safety during travel in South Africa. what about crime during your vacation? How bad is the crime in South Africa really? How much danger are you running now? The eternal discussion.

Is South Africa Safe?

Dangerous?

Do you have to be very careful and be very careful? How is crime and how dangerous is South Africa really. Opinions are quite divided abroad.

It just depends on how you look at it. I’ll try to explain it here.

Pieter Blaak, September 2020

Many visitors and tourists who visit South Africa still have an image of: South Africa Safety crime crime travel vacation. do I go or not.

As soon as the plane lands at Johannesburg airport I will be attacked or eaten by a lion .. If that does not happen then as soon as I leave the arrivals hall I will be raped or kidnapped ..

Experience with safety

Well I can tell you from experience that this is not the case .. Johannesburg has a bad reputation though. But don’t forget the airport is not located in Johannesburg just as Schiphol is not in the middle of Amsterdam. Johannesburg Airport is closer to Pretoria than Johannesburg. Both are roughly 60 km from the airport.

Is South Africa Safe

Please do not jump..

You didn’t know that, did you? But still makes sense. O’ja and the lions are in the reserves and national parks. They have not walked the streets here in South Africa for decades. This for a while already, as extra info.

Personal safety

First of all, personal safety in South Africa has to be seen in quite a perspective. Don’t forget that South Africa is a huge country. Roughly 5 times the size of the whole of Germany. And that’s great I can tell you ..

Having said this. Then add up roughly the crime statistics. The Netherlands, Germany, England, France, Italy, and a few more countries. Then compare this with the statistics of South Africa. Then the question really remains how South Africa scores with crime figures. I would like to see what is safer. Europe or South Africa. I myself think that Europe is more dangerous ..

Have there been robberies in South Africa? Yes! Are people being murdered in South Africa? Yes! Are people being harassed in South Africa? Yes!

And that happens in the Netherlands or in any other random country in Europe. The chance that something like this will happen to you is probably much smaller in South Africa than staying at home in your own country.

Most crime by far mainly takes place in the townships. That’s where the large numbers come from in the crime statistics. And you will not come there (in principle neither we, unless there is no other option) I personally think the specter of crime in South Africa has become a bit of a media spectacle and that for years. I’ll try to explain.

What people don’t realize Is South Africa Safe?

Just a funny and for you almost unimaginable thing .. Do you have any idea how the South Africans view the Netherlands? Well that is not good I can tell you. Everyone is on drugs. When you walk in a mall you get shot by someone with a machine gun. No. The Netherlands… You shouldn’t go there “that’s way too dangerous there” I mean ..

Perspective

Just to put it back into perspective. Ask yourself how concerned you are in your home in the Netherlands if a burglary or robbery has happened somewhere in Paris. You probably don’t even know and don’t really care. After all, you feel safe in your living environment, country and community, right? Well here I come again with perspective .. The Distance from Amsterdam to Paris is the same as the distance from Johannesburg to the Kruger Park ..

Do you get the picture a bit? This country is huge. really huge, you can hardly imagine that in the Netherlands. Keep this in mind if someone tells you that South Africa is not safe. “Promised?”

Take a different look Is South Africa Safe?

In addition … Are you going to walk around in the Bijlmer or just name a kind of disadvantaged neighborhood in any large city in the Netherlands. Full of jewelry, a large camera around your neck, a laptop in your hand and you get out of a beautiful, fairly new car there. And then you park it there. You take some things with you but also leave things behind in your car. You get off while you are unknown there …

What do you think will happen to you and your stuff? Right! You get the message. You become the irrevocable victim of some form of crime.

 So what about it?

And yes… you shouldn’t do that here in South Africa… Just like in all other countries. Stick to the normal safety measures that you would use at home and there is nothing wrong. The chance that something will happen to you is really very small. In all my years in South Africa I have been a victim of theft once .. And that was my own fault .. I had left my windows of my car open and quickly went in and out of a store .. I will come back to the car and yes ..

You get it .. I’m sure if I had properly locked my car then nothing really would have happened. They call that occasional theft, right?

So how safe is South Africa? South Africa is a safe country to live, work, live and most certainly to travel as a visitor or tourist and to make the trip of a lifetime. Without stress and without problems.

The problems

The problems with personal safety is mainly between the South African people themselves. That is what European news gathering is always so keen to capitalize on. It’s not so nice in the township and the local communities there. Jealousy plays a fairly large role here, poverty and hunger play a considerable role in this. And tensions regularly run up there. And you can see that on TV.

However, as said above. You won’t get there so quickly. And certainly not without a guide. If you do decide to take a look there.

This can actually be done under the guidance of an expert who knows the place and the people.

But .. Do not forget if you are traveling or on holiday from Europe in South Africa in your holiday clothes. Individually or on your own. Traveling alone or traveling with us as a driver and guide. Then think about it, and certainly take it into account. You have the letter written on your forehead with very large cows:

 “I AM A TOURIST”

Everything shows that you are not African. Your behavior, your attitude, everything. And yes. that is very interesting, right?

With us this has already faded, so to speak. We too pay attention and we know the country so well that we are not so anxious. The local people can see very well that we are South Africans and that we behave like that .. in other words ..

I myself am not afraid of anything .. And I can assure you. I’ve been really everywhere.

In the most terrible and dangerous places. And that as the only white person with thousands of others around me. It doesn’t really affect me that much anymore. I think that makes it different. Yes, of course I am approached every now and then, but that is not too bad. They want 5 Rand or ask for work. Well it could be worse right?

 Poverty and Hunger

Do not forget in a country such as South Africa and that applies to many countries that you can consider as a third world country. Are there a lot of people with nothing at all …

And there are some who have something …

And yes, then the people who have nothing really want to have something .. Whatever their motives may be.

South Africa should be seen as a first world country and a third world country in one. These two worlds live side by side and not with each other. It is not an apartheid story, but rich and poor. Townships with whites have also existed for years. Or mixed. Unemployment in South Africa is very high and that does not make things any easier for these people.

Put it in perspective Is South Africa Safe?

Specifically: Put everything in perspective and do not look at it with your European eyes, but try to see it from an African perspective. Then you will notice that things are not too bad and that you do not have to worry. You don’t have to worry about safety.

And yes .. This is Africa and there are a lot of dark colored people walking around (85%) and as a white tourist from Europe etcetera you are very much in the minority. You understand what I mean.

I notice that there are regularly people who feel uncomfortable with this. Yes and then I look at these people and think to myself.

You wanted to go to South Africa so badly?

Isn’t it known that the 85% of the inhabitants of South Africa are not white? Don’t you want to get to know other cultures so much? Wasn’t it the plan to see something different than usual? You’ve read yourself completely on the Internet, haven’t you? For months you have been doing nothing but watching National Geographic and Animal Planet? And after a 10-hour flight to the other side of the world, you expect it to be just like home? As in the Netherlands or maybe in Europe?

Not so ..

Well no .. You are in Africa. That is a different world, a different continent with different customs and customs. And no, they don’t do it like in the Netherlands here. Here they do it like in Africa.

And yes then I have a lot of fun in myself and have a nice story to tell …

 Ask? Is South Africa Safe?

Do you have questions here about South Africa, Security, crime, crime, travel. holiday in South Africa and / or do you want additional information. You can always contact me whether you are traveling with us or not.

Safety in the wilderness

This is a somewhat different story.

Indeed most people visit South Africa to see the Big 5. And yes there are a number of very left brothers among them. There are also many more animals that you really have to take into account.

I cannot say it often enough. It is not a zoo here .. petting animals is only done once.

Then your travel group has one less participant and has more space in the car.

Walking around a reserve … Ai … do you know that only food roams? And only food runs away .. And if you turn around .. Or run …

PAF… another participant less.

The Bush, Wildlife and Nature in Africa is really something special. And something you must have seen. Make sure you are “always” accompanied by someone who understands it. This one has had to learn for years. Years of experience and then listen to it ok?

Wildlife and rules

South Africa Security crime crime travel vacation animals… ai. ai all scary ..

See nature just like traffic. If you drive around in traffic without a driver’s license and you have never taken part in traffic … Yes, then it is boom and you have accidents. It is the same with wildlife. The (traffic) rules in the bush are what matters.

If you know the rules, can read the animals, can predict behaviors. Then you know what you are doing. However and that is different from in traffic .. Traffic violations in the bush … are punished deadly. There is no room for mistakes, mistakes and well it will go well

The African bush is unrelenting. Traffic is often still good. you are in the hospital for a few weeks and you start driving around again. In the bush … you never drive after a mistake again. get it?

So South Africa is dangerous. Oh Yes really very dangerous .. There are very big kitties walking around another very big animals with a trunk. Also animals that roam in the air and they are really out to catch you making a mistake ..

Without kidding.

Here we go again .. South Africa Security crime crime travel vacation scary intent All. Strange people with strange customs and very scary animals. And then a lot of everything.

There is no animal that sees a human as prey. Really none. We humans are dirty, we smell, do not taste good and are also very dangerous. A lion sometimes thinks about whether he wants to catch you. A snake really thinks a hundred times before it starts biting you ..

Do you want to know how and what? Then come along and go on safari with us and we will tell you all about it ok. It goes a bit far to fully explain how and what about nature.

A human is not food. But animals that feel threatened or their teritorum is harassed. Or has children. That animal will do anything and everything to protect it. And now I come back with my traffic rules story. If you know the rules of nature. Then it is absolutely safe.

But do you know the rules of nature, of wildlife. Have you read the Internet? Read booklets and have a chat with someone who has also been on Safaris in South Africa? Well believe me .. You know nothing .. and then it goes wrong .. hence Safari? under supervision and not being stubborn .. listen carefully to what is being said ok. Agreed? Deal?
