Clarens Golden Gate Highlands

Clarens in the Free State

Clarens is the “prettiest little village” in the Eastern Free State, if we are to believe the villagers. Admittedly, it is beautifully situated at the foot of the Maluti Mountains. Just outside the Golden Gate National Park and the Kingdom of Lesotho.

The picturesque village is surrounded by the Rooiberge and lies at the foot of Mount Horeb. The village is famous not only for its multi-colored sandstone formations. They can be found everywhere in the stones used for the construction of the village houses. Clarens is also known for the number of artists who work here. Sell their art in the small shops around the village square. A place where you can also relax in one of the cafes or on a terrace. Pay a visit to the local brewery to taste one of the Clarens beers, because local is good!

Clarens half way between Johannesburg and Durban

Johannesburg, Durban and Bloemfontein are a 3 to 4 hour drive away. That makes Clarens attractive as a fun day trip or weekend break for the people of these cities!

Clarens is called the jewel of the Free State because it is rich in beauty. With an aura of freedom and tranquility around her. Willows and the colorful blossom of the fruit trees are beautiful in the spring. The color palette in the fall may give artists even more inspiration. Thus, Clarens continues to attract more and more artists, photographers and nature lovers.

The villagers are proud of their good waters for trout fishing and the area is ideal for horse riding enthusiasts and of course there are beautiful walking and hiking routes in this area! A leisurely 18-hole walk on the Clarens golf and trout estate is also an option.

You can see game in the nearby area. Look for the San rock murals or search the Spiritual and visit one of South Africa’s most sacred sites; the Fertility Caves.

Adventurers will not be bored here either, as more and more adventurous outdoor activities are being undertaken. You can go ballooning with a view of the Maluti Mountains and take beautiful pictures. And quad biking, abseiling and white water canoeing make a holiday here unforgettable.
